Who We Are

Brighthelm is a well-established community venue situated in the heart of Brighton. (Charity Number 1137747) We provide professional and unique spaces for meetings, events, conferences and inspiration.

Values

“Brighthelm seeks to be a vibrant hub of hospitality, worship, learning, and action, pointing the way towards a world in which all living beings flourish together in the peace and love of God.”

  • A broad welcome: We will strive to be hospitable people, not only to customers but to each other. We will seek to build good relationships characterised by truthfulness, humility and reverence. Time spent well with others is time spent seeking our vision. We work together to overcome our prejudices
  • Reverence: Going deeper than respect, we will regard others as ‘holy’ and look for goodness in others, expecting to find it. Reverence may or may not be related to a belief in God. It extends to animals, plants, and the global biosphere.
  • Co-operation: We are one team, working together towards our vision. We will seek to avoid division but work collaboratively wherever possible and helping where we see a need.
  • Personal growth: We are people who want to learn new skills and explore new ideas. Brighthelm will facilitate the personal growth of staff and volunteers, including through a programme of support and development.
  • Loving service: We are here to help. Through our loving service, we build community and the flourishing of life. Brighthelm will be a safe place in which service can be offered without advantage being taken of the server’s good-will.

Sustainability

Sustainability lies at the heart of Brighthelm. We are very proud to have been the first Church in the UK to divest from fossil fuels.

Brighthelm is not afraid to position itself as a hub for discussion on sustainability. We are committed to working in partnership with local organisations who embrace and support sustainability where ever possible and have some such organisations as long term tenants in our building.

Our community garden hosts a ’butterfly bank’ and Brighton and Hove Food Partnership compost bins.

We are working in partnership with the University of Sussex to improve and review our sustainability and take action to reduce our environmental impact.

Brighthelm’s minister, Rev. Alex Mabbs, supports Churches and other organisations in developing their environmental responsibility. He had 25 such appointments during 2019, ranging from workshops during national conferences, sermons in Church services, leading day conferences for Churches, through to being the main speaker at Southern Synod Ministers’ residential Spring School. Alex has experience of both pastoral ministry and participation in environmental campaigning and applies this practical learning in giving people knowledge and confidence to take action for the environment.

Church

Brighthelm is a United Reformed Church, whose story dates back to the mid-sixteenth Century, when a group of Protestant Christians met to worship in a back room in The Lanes. We continue their legacy of dissenting faith that questions convention in the pursuit of truth and justice for all.

We hold a short weekly service of mid-day prayer on Tuesdays and a monthly celebration of the Eucharist on a Monday afternoon. Our Chapel is kept available for private prayer and meditation, with a variety of prayer resources available.

As a faith community we are passionate about the environment. In 2019 we started ’Earth Church’ to start a conversation about faith in a changing climate. We now meet with Christian Climate Action and hold eco related events and worship throughout the year. Contact us to find out more.

Cafe

We run a popular cafe on our ground floor. The cafe serves Roasted coffee, freshly made cakes and a range of paninis.

The cafe is open 9-4pm Monday to Friday.

We are a large, accessible space and a perfect location to meet people, have informal meetings or catchup with friends.

Tables can be reserved for larger groups, just email info@brighthelm.org.uk or call 01273 821512.

The space is available for hire after 4pm.

Trustees

Brighthelm is both a Charity and a Trading Company. This means we are governed by a Trustee team. Our trustees are predominately members of the United Reformed Church, and work to lead us on the strategic vision for the centre.
